“OJ Radio,” Otabenga Jones & Associates’ temporary radio station that will broadcast from the back of a 1959 Cadillac for the run of #FunkGodJazzMedicine, pays homage to “The East,” a cultural hub for awareness of Black Nationalism and Pan-Africanism founded in 1969. Here are some of Ossei Terry Chandler’s incredible photographs of the early members and activities of The East, taken in the 1970s.

The wave also functions to obscure and obfuscate, not just move ships from place to place.

Seriously though, people are going to look back at Kanye West’s autotuned improvised speeches (what some call rants) and be able to draw a direct line to H. Rap Brown, and Gil Scott-Heron and a host of others. It’s like screaming at a wall… like a genre of experience made by those that were left to die, burn, rot in tenements and vacated urban areas, partying and protesting all on a continuum, made into a product or service to benefit those same entities that left hoods and their residents in shambles, and he’s trying to bring it back. He’s clearly benefited from the environment where rap can be a profitable venture, but is also aware of the role it had in its inception and is trying to bring a return to that, albeit from his own highly-privileged position. It’s something like punk, something like hiphop. There’s the rage and indignation, but also the privilege, and definite youthful energy. Not gonna lie, I’d take this over most of Henry Rollins’ spoken word any day. Shout out to The Marcus Garvey of Ford City Mall

2014 this is rap to get you hyped in the studio, the cubicle, the lab, the dungeon--where the magic happens, even though magic ain't real. the mayans were right, ho. AWRS; GAWS
